Basement waterproofing FAQ.
Straight answers on cost, methods, timelines and what to expect from a waterproofing contractor.
How much does basement waterproofing cost?
Most homeowners spend between $3,000 and $12,000. Crack injection can be a few hundred dollars per crack, interior drain tile with a sump pump usually runs $45–$110 per linear foot, and full exterior excavation with a membrane is typically $120–$300 per linear foot. Is it free to get matched with a waterproofing expert?
Yes. Requesting a match and comparing estimates costs you nothing and there is no obligation to hire anyone. You decide who to talk to and whether to move forward.
What is the difference between interior and exterior waterproofing?
Interior systems manage water that has already reached the foundation, collecting it in a drain channel and pumping it out. Exterior waterproofing excavates down to the footing and seals the outside of the wall so water never reaches it. Exterior is more thorough and more expensive; interior is faster and far less disruptive.
Can I waterproof my basement myself?
Small jobs — cleaning gutters, extending downspouts, regrading soil, sealing a hairline crack — are realistic DIY projects. Drain tile, sump installation, excavation and structural repairs are best left to a specialist, since a mistake can mean water damage or a cracked slab.
How long does basement waterproofing last?
A properly installed interior drainage system or exterior membrane commonly lasts 20 years or more, and many contractors back their work with transferable warranties. Sump pumps are the exception — plan to replace them every 7–10 years.
What is polyurea waterproofing?
Polyurea is a spray-applied elastomer that cures in seconds into a seamless, flexible membrane. It bridges hairline cracks, tolerates movement and stands up to standing water, which makes it a strong choice for foundation walls, floors and exterior below-grade work.
Will waterproofing fix a musty smell?
Usually, yes. Musty odors come from moisture and the mildew it feeds. Stopping the water and controlling humidity — often with a coating plus a dehumidifier — removes the source. Existing mold may also need remediation.
Does homeowners insurance cover basement water damage?
Standard policies generally cover sudden events like a burst pipe but exclude groundwater seepage and surface flooding. Sewer backup and flood coverage are usually separate add-ons. Check your policy and talk with your agent.
How long does a waterproofing job take?
Crack injection is often done in a few hours. Interior drain tile and a sump pump typically take one to three days. Exterior excavation projects can take several days to a week or more depending on depth, access and weather.
Should I waterproof before finishing my basement?
Absolutely. Fixing water problems after drywall, flooring and furniture go in costs far more. Waterproofing first protects the finished space and is something buyers and inspectors look for.
